Kyoto, Japan – Day 4(a)

We headed west from Tokyo to Kyoto for our 3D2N trip to catch some red leaves. It was a 3 hours train ride on the shinkansen so we settled ourselves comfortably in the train with lots of train bento. This was just part of it, we bought like 10 bentos of different varieties.

Lot of fallen leaves along the way, even though it was considered early in the season for Kyoto.

The Sagano Scenic Railway (嵯峨野観光鉄道, also known as the Sagano Romantic Train or Sagano Torokko) is a sightseeing train line that runs along the Hozugawa River between Arashiyama and Kameoka. Its charming, old fashioned trains wind their way through the mountains at a relatively slow pace, taking about 25 minutes to make the seven kilometer journey and giving passengers a pleasant view of the scenery as they travel from Arashiyama through the forested ravine and into rural Kameoka

We took the train to Umahori (馬堀駅) from Kyoto and walked about 10 minutes to Torokko Kameoka Station (トロッコ亀岡) to take the Sagano Romantic Train. Early reservations are recommended during the peak autumn season but as we were early in the season so we could buy the tickets on the spot. (I would like to try out this 2 hours boat ride the next time, you can read more about it here)

These were the views along the way and I would recommend choosing the seats from the open top as it was much more fun but it was very noisy as the train traveled quite fast.

We stopped at Torokko Arashiyama (トロッコ嵐山), 1 stop before the final stop so that we can take a slow walk back to Arashiyama area. The first photo stop would be the Bamboo groves

Then it was a slow and leisurely walk to Togetsukyo Bridge, the most iconic landmark for Arashiyama.

The place would be beautiful during the peak of autumn where the leaves will turn into patches of red and orange. Spring time is also pretty as cherry blossom would line the river sides.
