Another old town that is bustling with life…..all for some Wisteria (藤・Fuji) flowers. It was almost 2 hours from train from Tokyo to arrive at Tomita Station in Tochigi Prefecture (富田駅)
The Japanese love flowers, and wisteria are among their favorites. Wisteria are called fuji in Japanese, like Mt. Fuji, but unlike the mountain, the flower is pronounced by stressing the second syllable. One of the best places to view fuji flowers is the Ashikaga Flower Park in Ashikaga City, Tochigi Prefecture. Ashikaga Flower Park features lots of blue, white and pink fuji, as well as yellow laburnum (Japanese: kingusari) that look like yellow colored fuji.

Definitely very romantic……no wonder the Japanese are in love with these flowers.
Giant purple wisteria, the branches are supported so that it can be spread out to create a giant canopy.
A light floral scent when you pass through the Wisteria tunnel created by the giant branches.
Seats were also placed in front for one to relax and watch the flowers sashayed under the sun and wind.

The park was packed with people since it was the Golden week holidays.

The white Wisteria flowers bridge.
I was lucky to visit the park when the flowers were fully opened. If you even visit Japan in the first 2 weeks of May, do consider to visit this flower park. I went in the day but park is opened till late with illuminations on the flowers so I guess it would be an even more romantic sight?
Check out the official youtube video for the night illumination. Isn’t it pretty?
Omiyage, really cute Hello Kitty strawberry flavored drinks, limited edition to Tochigi prefecture nevertheless.
Lunch will be the famous Utsunomiya gyoza famous in Tochigi, Utsunomiya gyoza is number 2 in ranking for omiyage from the recent TV show I watched. Crispy on the outisde but lots of juice from the minced pork and lettuce inside. Definitely thumbs up….
