[Throwback May] On the last day of May, we all rented a car and decided to head out to Yamanashi Prefecture which is famous for their cherry picking (Yeah, they claim that their cherries are Number 1 in Japan). The peak season for the cherries would be June but we decided to head over earlier so as not to jostle with the crowd. However, weekends means traffic jams and long queues at service areas as most JApanese are out for a day trip out of Tokyo to somewhere.
Service areas are pretty fancy for some places with lots of food and drink choices, along with clean washrooms. There is also a service counter available should you change your mind last minute and want to find a accommodation for the night and they have a counter to help you with your reservations and recommendations on where to stay and go.
Finally with some slight traffic, we arrived at our lunch place after 3 hours on the road (the original drive should have only been 2 hours). Vineyards with grapes growing, in another 1.5 months we would get to start some grape picking too.
Lunch chosen was at this place that is inside a small local winery.
we booked a table at the terrace so we would be able to enjoy the fresh air and a view of nature…..
Even water served had a tinge of mint inside.
Their famous bread and cheese platter that had too much food for 1600JPY. EVeryone was stuffed full.
How can you not have a sip of their wine since you are in the winery, our poor designated driver could only watch us drink.
Beer curry stew, the meat was cooked really tender and soft.
Homemade tofu served with some light soy sauce or salt. The tofu had this fresh “bean” smell and taste to it which is not easily detected from those packed tofu we get from the super markets.

We regretted a little to have our cherry picking reservations right after lunch as everyone was TOO Stuffed! It was only a short 10 minutes drive from lunch to the fruit farm….
30 minutes of eat all you can in the cherry farm for 2000JPY. Cherry picking is one of the most expensive for fruit picking. Their season are really short too, running only about 1.5 months.
You can also buy a box to pick some cherries home, 1 kg of cherry would cost you 5000JPY.
Do you see the tinge of red? That is what we have came here for. The rule of thumb for fruit picking is always to arrive early. I still remember that there wasn’t much left of ripe cherries for us when we arrived at the farm at 4pm for last year’s adventure.
First we were led to the patch where the American cherries are, they are redder and ripen faster.

you just pick and pop them into your mouth and just spit the seeds onto the ground…..It is just a matter of how much you can eat.
Our second half was the Japanese cherries which were more orangey tone, it would get red when it has enough nutrients from the sun to give its sweetness
Give it a little more time under the sun and they would become more red.
Why we were there, of course to eat as much as we can.
Yummy! Fruits picked fresh from their trees are always the best.
If you can go higher up, the sweeter ones are usually up there as they get more sun.

Give them another 1.5 months and they would grow to be at least 1kg of grapes………
