Hokkaido Summer Retreat (Niki Cherry Picking/Hokuryu Sunflowers/Asahigawa) – Day 2

Lake Toya
Woke up to this view. So serene, could just sit at the sofa and relax.

Once the sun is fully up, the mist would clear out.

Driving in Hokkaido
It is so fun to drive in Hokkaido as the roads are wide and mostly straight.

Driving in Hokkaido
Too bad the driver of the day, me, can’t admire these views till much later in the night from the photos.

Niki Cherry Picking
After 1.5 hours of drive, we arrived in Niki district where you can pick cherries at Sakuranbo Yama!

Niki Cherry Picking
Hokkaido is not famous for their cherries so it is much cheaper to pick cherries, only 1000JPY person with no time limit for eat all you can and we can pack 100g to go per person. (We paid 2000JPY per person for 30 minutes in Yamanashi)

Niki Cherry Picking
Cherries in abundance, there was much cherries on the trees unpicked.

Driving in Hokkaido
Then it was another 30 minutes drive to get some seafood lunch at Misaki in Otaru. Seafood is much fresher and cheaper in Hokkaido so we got those better cuts of sashimi which would had cost more in Tokyo.

Otaru Lunch
Fatty tuna don.

Since it was so fresh, I got my uni (sea urchin) fill else there is always a fishy smell for those in Tokyo as it is not that fresh already.

Hokuryu Sunflowers
2 hours up front in a small town called Hokuryu famous for their vast spread of sunflowers

Hokuryu Sunflowers
We were there end of July so only half of their sunflower fields were in bloom but I think this is the right timing where you can get to see both lavenders and sunflowers.

Hokuryu Sunflowers
Cheered your day up already?

Hokuryu Sunflowers
Now you know which direction the sun is coming from.

Hokuryu Sunflowers
That field patch was so huge, everywhere you walk is just sunflowers.

Hokuryu Sunflowers
300JPY extra if you want to try out the sunflower maze.

Hokuryu Sunflowers
Have you seen this shade of sunflower before?

Hokuryu Sunflowers
Light yellow ones?

Hokuryu Sunflowers
Perky sunflower.

Hokuryu Sunflowers
Not sure if you remember this 10 year old Japanese movie called Be With You, this was where I knew that such beautiful sunflower fields existed in Japan.

Asahigawa Ramen
Finally arriving at our final stop of the day, after 40 minutes of drive into Asahigawa city.

Asahigawa Ramen
Ramen shrine, god of ramen exist too.

Asahigawa City
After a long day, we finally checked into Hotel Paco in Asahigawa. Pretty simple business hotel but they had a onsen attached so definitely great for you to soak in the hot springs after a long day. Good night!

Oooo yum….I’ve been to that ramen village in Asahigawa! The ramen was to-die-for and we had half bowls and shared so we could try different types. What a lovely road trip….I totally agree Hokkaido is a great place to drive.

@BB: We chose one of the ramen with long line but it was just normal so was a little disappointed but the ramen next day made up for it. But overall it was still a great Hokkaido trip
