Akiba Fukurou (Owl Cafe)

There is a recent uptrend for furry cafes in Tokyo. After cats and rabbits cafe, we know have a few owl cafes sprouting around Tokyo. I visited Akiba Fukurou, the pioneer shop for this type of cafes in Akihabara

Just 5 minutes away from Akihabara, in a small alley, lie this small owl cafe shop. You have a to make a reservation in advance either online, or you can just pick up a time slot card in front of their shop. You can’t see what is going inside as they have all the curtains down. Each time slot has about 12 guests each time and 1 time slot is about 1 hour each. You pay 1500JPY for this hour where you can pet and take photos with the owls in the cafe. Even though, we say that it is a cafe but no food/drinks are served. You only get a bottle of mineral water in return.

Here is the time slot card which you can pick up assuming you did not make any reservations online.

15 minutes before your time slot, staff would come out to distribute the manner booklet for you to go through so you know what are the dos and don’t. Rule of thumb is never to place a smaller owl near the bigger ones as it would attack them. NO loud voice or screaming as it would agitate the owls.

Once it is your time, the staff would lead everyone in and you pay upon entry and you would be asked to find a seat.

There seems to be at least 20 owls in this tiny cafe.

Wonder if they are tired with all these humans coming to stroke and pet them.

But I managed to catch a cheeky one!

The biggest owl in this room is this owl from Osaka called Takoyaki. He is so big that we cannot put him on our arms for photos.

Sleepy owls.

Aki Fukurou
why you want to take photos of me?

Aki Fukurou
The second biggest owl in the cafe but this little guy is pretty feisty too.

The more mild owls in the room.

Fully grown but really tiny owl.

Easier to take photos with the smaller sized ones but they get scared easier so they would keep pooing on your hands. How you know they are going to poo on your hands? You feel a gust of warm air on your hand, and oh no! Staff would provide you with wet tissues to wipe the shit off so don’t worry.

The star of the whole breed, Snow owl. Looks off a scene in Harry Potter?

Aki Fukurou
Everyone wants to take a photo with him too.

Ignoring the humans for some cuddles.

Love this photo taken by my friend.

Most of the decoration in the tiny room was owl themed too.
