There is a recent uptrend for furry cafes in Tokyo. After cats and rabbits cafe, we know have a few owl cafes sprouting around Tokyo. I visited Akiba Fukurou, the pioneer shop for this type of cafes in Akihabara
Just 5 minutes away from Akihabara, in a small alley, lie this small owl cafe shop. You have a to make a reservation in advance either online, or you can just pick up a time slot card in front of their shop. You can’t see what is going inside as they have all the curtains down. Each time slot has about 12 guests each time and 1 time slot is about 1 hour each. You pay 1500JPY for this hour where you can pet and take photos with the owls in the cafe. Even though, we say that it is a cafe but no food/drinks are served. You only get a bottle of mineral water in return.
15 minutes before your time slot, staff would come out to distribute the manner booklet for you to go through so you know what are the dos and don’t. Rule of thumb is never to place a smaller owl near the bigger ones as it would attack them. NO loud voice or screaming as it would agitate the owls.
Easier to take photos with the smaller sized ones but they get scared easier so they would keep pooing on your hands. How you know they are going to poo on your hands? You feel a gust of warm air on your hand, and oh no! Staff would provide you with wet tissues to wipe the shit off so don’t worry.
