Jojoen (叙々苑 新宿小田急ハルク店)

jojoen
Jojoen is a famous high end Korean BBQ chain in Japan and received much following amongst the salarymen and Taiwanese tourists.

jojoen
I had always wanted to check out this place as it seems to be the in the must go to eat list amongst all my Taiwanese friends and finally I got the chance to go my last Tokyo trip.

jojoen
We went to the Shinjuku Odakyu departmental store branch when it opened at 530pm as I was due to go back to take over babysitting by 8pm. It takes about 1 hour for me to go back to my in law’s home so it was actually quite a rushed dinner. I would recommend to go eat here only if you have the luxury of time for dinner as the place gets crowded by 630pm with the dinner crowd and the service become extremely slow.

Kimchi appetizer plate.

jojoen
My friend got premium set so raw beef with egg was part of the set.

jojoen
Urban sky dinning, eating our dinner while watching the crowd in Shinjuku.

jojoen
This was the normal cut beef and shrimp set.

jojoen
Premium cut beef and lobster set. Surprisingly it was really filling and I have to admit the the beef from the premium cut was really good.

jojoen
We chose the abalone congee over the udon as we were really full but unfortunately we were unable to eat our dessert from our set as it was already 730pm and I was in a rush to get home. So, if you ever decide to try out this place please make sure you have the luxury of time!

TOKYO 豚骨 BASE MADE by 博多一風堂 池袋店

Tokyo Tonkatsu Base Ramen
[Throwback December] We arrived late on Christmas eve in to Tokyo and while Sushi san had to client meeting on Christmas day (Christmas Day is not a holiday in Japan), I was busy with my beauty appointments (yes, I would get my hair and nails cared for when I go back to Tokyo) and meeting of my friends. In a rush of time, I only had 20 minutes to spare before my next appointment. I chanced upon this ramen shop near the east exit at Ikebukuro Station. It is a sister ramen shop under the Ippundo Chain with pork bone soup base, which sounded awesome since it was freaking cold and I do miss REAL Japanese ramen.

Tokyo Tonkatsu Base Ramen
Ramen choices seems pretty similiar to what is offered in Ippundo.

Tokyo Tonkatsu Base Ramen
The recommended ramens from their signboard. From left: spicy miso, shoyu (soy base) and original pork soup based.

Tokyo Tonkatsu Base Ramen
Like Ippundo, the condiments are the spicy side dish, ginger sliced and garlic.

Tokyo Tonkatsu Base Ramen
I got the basic pork soup based ramen. Maybe it had been a long time, or maybe it was cold. Sipping the thick broth was so heavenly. I would come back again if I am ever in a rush and need some hot food 🙂

Sugamo Tokiwa Shokudo (巣鴨ときわ食堂 駒込店)

komagome dinner
Apparently this is quite a famous shop from neighboring Sumgano, this little Japanese home style food cafeteria has been drawing quite a bit of crowd since it opened in my neighborhood in September.

komagome dinner
The chef recommended set of fried shrimp rice set for 1280JPY, complete with rice and soup. Like most eatery in Japan, you can ask for 1 rice re-fill.

komagome dinner
We visited in season where sanma (サンマ / 秋刀魚) was in season, which is Autumn. The fish are supposed to reach their prime fatty season. You can get a Sanma fish set freshly grilled with a wait time of 15 minutes after you place your order.

komagome dinner
The place was serving food that almost tasted like from a Japanese home kitchen that we shortly visited it again since we would be moving away soon. This time, we got the fried oyster set.

komagome dinner
Stew sea bass rice set was also available. Anything that is served from home is almost available in their menus here. No wonder it is such a big hit in the neighborhood, especially in the late hours like 9-10pm where most of the salarymen would drop in for their later dinner (supper) before heading home.

Derikaondoru Korean BBQ (でりかおんどる 新大久保本店)

2014_09_19
[Throwback September] Been wanting to try out this place for ages, cos everytime I passed by this shop the line is super long and we ended up at other places for Korean food. This time we waited for 30 minutes even though we were there early at 12pm.

The side dishes.

Fresh lettuces with bean paste and sesame oil for your meat.

IMG_7888
Waiting for our BBQ, love the way they BBQ meat here where the hot plate is slated so the excess oil would flow down.

IMG_7887
Slabs of fatty pork belly.

IMG_7892
They always place the kimchi at the end so the pork oil would flow over the kimchi. Delicious!

Sharin Ramen, Ueno (舎鈴 アトレ上野店)

Ueno Ramen
Always met with a long line when I passed by this store in Ueno. I thought that this was a branch of the famous Rokurinsha Ramen and decided I must eat here one of these days.

Ueno Ramen
This place is famous for their tsukemen too…..

Ueno Ramen
Yummy! Like I have mentioned before, once I had my first tsukemen in Japan. There was no more going back, always tsukemen for me from them. I just love their extra flavored soup for dips.

Ueno Ramen
Not a big portion so it was easy to finish it up.

Ueno Ramen
One tip is to remember to ask for “スープ割り” (suupu wari) after your finish your noodles and with remaining soup dip. This is the best part of having tsukemen, drinking the diluted soup after they added hot pipping soup either of fish, pork or chicken based. Yummy!

Komagome Korean BBQ (明翠園)

明翠園
Apparently right opposite the popular smoky Korean BBQ is also another popular BBQ patronised by many people who live in the area. They also provided a lot of “free” items too.

明翠園
Sushi san loves kimchi too.

明翠園
The meat are sliced much thinner compared to their competitor opposite

明翠園
Beef slices seasoned with spring onions.

明翠園
Galbi served seasoned in a earthen pot.

明翠園
Too much meat by now?

明翠園
We prefer this place as it is not as smoky and the thinner sliced meat is much more easier to BBQ

明翠園
My first try with fresh egg as a sauce condiment for my meats…….only in japan! 😉

Yasaimura Daichi (やさい村 大地)

やさい村 大地
Sushi San highly recommended me this place saying that I would love it. In fact, it is a place that is highly raved by ladies. I was a little surprised since Korean BBQ is usually well appreciated by the boys more because of the meat.

やさい村 大地
The usual condiments served during a Korean meal.

やさい村 大地
What makes this place so popular with ladies, the variety of vegetables that is served besides the meat. The vegetables served was fresh and since they sprayed some water on the greens before serving it to you, the vegetables were also crunchy. We just got the BBQ set for 2, you can upgrade to eat all you can for the vegetables for an addtional price and they would serve you a long plate fully filled with vegetables.

I assure you, this tastes as yummy as the photo.

やさい村 大地
The BBQ set comes with either a choice of rice, soup or noodles. Got us some cold noodles.

やさい村 大地
My Korean meal would not be completed with Ttukbaegi gyeranjjim (steam egg in earthen pot) Highly recommended if you are looking for a nice Korean BBQ place that is not necessary to be in Shinokubo area.
